None of this is required, and if you are standing in a flooded laundry room, skip it and call. But if you have a minute, these four answers let us tell you far more on the first call.

- Whether it got worse after heavy rain
- Roughly when the tank was last pumped
- Whether the property is on a private well as well as septic
Why we charge for the visit, and why you usually do not pay it
Finding out what is wrong is real work. It puts a technician, a truck and twenty years of pattern recognition on your property, and that is worth something even when the answer turns out to be simple. So there is a service call charge for coming out, on septic and on wells alike.
If you go ahead with the work, we waive it. Not sometimes, and not off the first invoice only — if the visit turns into a job, the charge comes off. You are told the amount on the phone before anyone is dispatched, so there is nothing on the bill you did not agree to.
We are straight about the reason. A diagnosis has a habit of walking out of the door: people call a septic company to find out what is wrong, then go and fix it themselves. Charging for the trip and refunding it on the work means the people who want the job done pay nothing extra for the diagnosis, and we are not giving the day away.

On permitted work that means the site evaluation, the soil testing and the permit. You get it in writing, so the job can start.

The evaluation happens on site. The results are what the county needs and what your final number depends on.

With the soil results and the permit in hand, the price for the actual work is real rather than a guess with a margin built in.
